Cellulite doesn’t discriminate; found on bottoms, thighs and even upper arms, cellulite strikes women of all ages and sizes. With the swimsuit season upon us, Dr. Simone Laubscher, PhD shares 10 simple tips to say goodbye to that orange-peel look and hello to silky smooth skin.
“All women are prone to cellulite due to hormones and our pre-disposition to store fat in our hips and thighs. Cellulite is normal fat beneath the skin that appears lumpy because it pushes against connective tissue, causing a dimpling effect to the skin. By taking a scientific view of cellulite, we can find effective ways to help improve its appearance. As I say to my patients, cellulite will always be there if you squeeze the skin on your thighs but the trick is reduce it to a level that that it is minimised and hardly seen to the naked eye.”
Drink up
Water retention plays a big role in the appearance of cellulite; the more water you drink, the less water you hold. By drinking 2L of water per day with infused cucumber shavings, lemon and mint, you will help your body let go of unwanted water retention.
Balance your hormones
The more your hormones are out of balance, the more water you hold due to excessive oestrogen, which make your cellulite worse. If you eat animal protein, try to choose organic and if you eat fish, choose line caught over farmed. For a clean source of protein, The SUPER ELIXIR Nourishing Protein is all-plant, helping to balance hormones without increasing acidity in the body.
Cut the salt
Excessive sodium and deficient magnesium can make your cellulite worse. Reduce your salt to 1 pinch of good clean sea or Himalayan salt. Increase magnesium rich foods in your diet with dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, avocado, fish and beans.
Go alkaline
Cellulite is quickened by an accumulation of toxins; the more acidic you are, the more toxins and water you will hold. Even if you don't have a very toxic lifestyle, you can still be running too acidic due to your protein-to-carb ratios being out of balance. Two teaspoons of THE SUPER ELIXIR Alkalising Greens in 250ml of water brings you on the fast-track to living alkaline and supports all 11 systems of the body including your circulatory system.
Get moving
Boost your circulation and quality of your connective tissue through interval training, cardio exercise, massage and skin brushing. Always remember to do your skin brushing upwards towards your heart.
Balance your blood sugar levels
Eat a diet consisting of low to moderate GI (glycemic index) foods to keep your blood sugar levels balanced.
Healthy fats
The more animal fats you eat, the more toxic fat you store which may accumulate in those cellulite prone areas. Swap animal fats for the goods fats such as avocado, fish oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil, nuts, seeds and olives that help with blood circulation.
Drain can be good thing
Give your lymphatic system a helping hand as it is responsible for draining unwanted toxins from the tissues into your blood and thus out of the body. Your lymphatic system has no natural pump and only works if you move your body. Lymphatic drainage is great but jumping on a trampoline or a re-bounder is great to improve your circulation and cellulite.
Reduce caffeine
Try to limit your caffeine intake to one cup per day and always keep one hour away from food so that the absorbing of the key nutrients from your food is not impaired. Swap caffeinated drinks for herbal teas such as nettle, lemon and ginger, dandelion & juniper berry, which are excellent for cellulite.
Dehydrate the cellulite
Just like using tea bags under your eyes to removed puffy eyes, the same can be done for your cellulite. Use a compress of iced tea, seaweed or mud wraps on your cellulite to dehydrate the area and improve the appearance of cellulite. All the other tips above will help you reduce your cellulite but this tip will help improve the appearance.
